👶🏼 Newborns typically have the coordination to suck, swallow, and pace themselves during a feed. However, preemies lack that skill due to their prematurity. ⠀

👶🏽 Preemies main concern are usually focused on breathing first. Being born premature may mean that they lack the coordination to eat because that skill isn’t fully developed yet. Breathing and eating at the same time is a lot harder than it looks for a baby! 😆⠀

👶🏾 As nurses, it is our role to teach and pace our babies on how to breath and eat at the same time. Assess your babies capabilities and be patient. Positioning and certain techniques are very important and remember that the baby is truly the boss. ⠀
