š© So Iāve been getting tons of messages and comments from you guys asking if itās possible to land a NICU position without any NICU clinical experience. I will admit that it may be a bit challenging but it is definitely possible!ā
ā
š Here are some of my tips to help you out: ā
ā
1ļøā£ Do your senior focus, externship, volunteer service, and/or pick up an after school job in anything pediatrics. Remember, NICU is a very tiny patient population you are working with. Employers want to see that you can work with this age group well. Some examples could be babysitting, day care centers, after school programs, etc. ā
ā
2ļøā£ Get certifications! NRP is a requirement for NICU so it would be in your best interest to obtain it. And if you want to go a bit more above and beyond you can also get STABLE as well. ā
ā
3ļøā£ A few of you are getting your CNA license before or during nursing school. If possible, see if you can shadow or float to the NICU just to get your foot through the door. Even better if you can land a CNA position in the NICU as well. ā
ā
4ļøā£ And lastly, show in your interviews how passionate you are and what drew you into this unit. Everyoneās experiences are different and employers want to make sure you are here because your heart is in it. What do you want to contribute to this unit? And really ask yourself āwhy NICU?ā
