❓Answering Your Frequently Asked Questions About NICU 👶🏻⠀⠀

1️⃣ How did you get to this point in your career? What is the path you took?⠀

After I graduated high school, I did 4 years at a university to obtain my bachelors degree in nursing (BSN). After graduation, I spent 6 months applying to NICU new grad positions until I finally landed my first job in the NICU. ⠀

2️⃣ What would you recommend to someone who is interested in going into this field?⠀

Get the opportunity to do your senior preceptorship in the NICU. Gain necessary certifications to make you stand out such as NRP and STABLE. Volunteer, do work study, join clubs, etc.⠀

3️⃣ Do you need prior work experience to get into the NICU?⠀

I did not have prior work experience but in nursing school I was a baby cuddler in the NICU and volunteered with children. ⠀

4️⃣ Does this career require you to have certain certifications before becoming a NICU nurse?⠀

It is not a requirement but highly recommended to get your NRP and STABLE certifications. You can be hired without these and get it once you start working but it will definitely make you stand out in your job hunt. ⠀

5️⃣ How do you like your chosen career?⠀

It was the best decision I ever made to chase my dreams of working in the NICU. I honestly can’t imagine myself working in any other unit. My goal is to continue working in this field with this patient population and advance further in my career in the NICU, since I am extremely passionate about it 🥰
